Yaiskul bypoll fixed for Dec 19

Imphal, Nov 20: Bye-election to the 14/Yaiskul Assambly constituency which became vacant earlier after the demise of Elangbam Kunjeswor, MLA, of the Congress, has been fixed today by the Election Commission of India (ECI), joint CEO of state government N Praveen.

As per the notification, elections to the 14-Yaikul AC will be held on December 19, Saturday.

Official announcement of election will be made on November 25 and last date for nomination will be on December 2, date of scrutiny of the nomintations will be on December 3 and date of withrawal of canditatures will be on December 5 next month.

The notification further mentioned that counting of votes for the bye-election will be on December 23 and date before which election shall be completed will be on December 31.

It may be mentioned that, the Election Commission of India considering the casual vacancies in the state Legislative Assmblies of Andra Pradesh in its 248- Pulivendla AC, 225-Tiruchendur and 51-Wandiwash ACs of Tamil Nadu and 14-Yaiskuk AC of Manipur, simultanous bye-election schedule have been announced today by RK Srivastava, Secy ECI having same tentitive prgrammes of the election process.

On the other hand, as per the official notification essued by the joint CEO, Manipur today, the election model code of conduct shall come into force immediately with the issuance of the notification today in the entire Imphal East ditrict of Manipur and model code of conduct shall be applicable to all candidates, political parties and state government as well to the union government as far as these states are concerned.

The officialnotification also further mentioned that, there will be utilisation of

electronic voting machines and identifications of voters throught their issued voter IDs during the ensuing bye-elections in the 14-Yaiskul AC.

It may also mentioned that, the seat for 14- Yaiskul AC remain vacant following the sudden demised of seating MLA, Elangbam Kujeshore on September 17 due to an illness.

On the other hand, due to the existing trumoil in the state in the aftermath of the July 23 BT road incident, the preparations for the bye-elections to the 14-Yaiskul AC could not be done openly till today.

There are reports of a rush of many aspiring candidates contesting the bye-election in the constituency through Congress ticket but there has been no announcement from both ruling Congress and it allies to contest the bye-election in the constiteuncy till today.

Besides, though there has been an understanding amongst the opposition parties to send out their consensus candidate to contest the bye election during a series of meetings held earleir, the opposition parties are still in chaos and unable to come up with a consensus candidate.
