DM and GP students demand violence free, secure campuses

The Imphal Free Press

IMPHAL, Nov 18: Sit-in-protest stirs by the students of the three faculties of the DM College and the girl hostellers of GP Women College continued for the second day today to protest against the raid carried out by Manipur police commandos inside the DM College hostel on the night of November 16.

Around a hundred students of these colleges staged a protest along the Thangmeiband road from this morning around 10 am by displaying the placards carrying the slogans like, stop harassment to the students, stop killings inside the college campus, stop disturbing students, leave students alone and stop evesteasing girl students etc.

Later, a joint team of DM College Students Union submitted a memorandum to commissioner of education this afternoon making a number of demands.

The memorandum of the union expressed concerns over the practice of using the college campus for killing and disposing victims, which has created a fear psychosis amongst the students, apart from defiling the sanctity of the college as an educational institution.

They demanded a concrete assurance that the sanctity of the college campuses would be respected and honoured by the state forces in the future.

The memorandum also further demanded an immediate halt to unauthorized frisking and operations inside the campus where students reside.

It also called for a stop to beating up or harassing of individuals/civilians/undergrounds during college hours which tend to create insecurity amongst the students who are inside their class.

The memorandum further demanded fencing in all of the college boundaries so as to ward off unwanted elements who sneak in during night and indulge in immoral activities.

It also called for installation of gates at all the transit points, installation of street lamps inside the college campus, providing security at the hostels and main gates to monitor and verify visitors and entrants, providing other necessary infrastructures, amenities and renovation works which are necessary for ensuring conducive academic atmosphere.

Lastly the union appealed that an acceptable and viable solution is brought to ensure the safety of the students and hostelers.

In a later development the proposed agitation of students of DM College was defused with the assurances given by the commissioner education during the meeting to fulfil the demands of the students.
