IMPHAL, Nov 4: The Naga Students` Union, Delhi, in a statement today informed it has submitted a memorandum to the chief minister of Delhi, Shiela Dikshit, representing the anguished northeasterners in Delhi in connection with the recent murder of a Manipuri Girl, Ramchanphi Hongray in Munirka with a charter of demands for the security of the Northeasterners in the state Capital.
The memorandum signed by Luikang Lamak president, Zuben Ovung, general secretary, while appealed for justice and equality.
There are 90,000 to 1, 00,000 northeasterners in Delhi struggling to find a career window in the capital of India, it said.
They had been driven to Delhi on account of lack of opportunities back in the North East, it said.
"However, we are being treated in the national capital not merely as "others" but further as subhumans without respecting our sociocultural and geopolitical differences" the memorandum said.
It also said the Delhi Police has never been the protector to these vulnerable sections of population. Rather, they blamed the Northeasterners for being different, and shamelessly issued pamphlets of "Police Diktats", for these unprotected people in the year 2007, (about how to dress, what to eat, where to go, when to sit etc) it said.
"However, without losing confidence to the establishment, we the students from the Northeast in Delhi have been time and again sending representation to the office of the chief minister, registering protest againsts against racial profiling of Northeastern students, constant harassment to the womenfolk, unhelpful attitude of the Delhi Police to the Northeastern communities, etc," it said.
It drew the attention of the concerned authority to ponder awhile on democracy in India through these "Discrimination, Racial Profiling, Devaluing the Northeastern Cultures and Social Values, and Constant Abused to Northeast Womenfolk etc."
