Tobacco consignment seized

The Imphal Free Press

IMPHAL, Dec 3: Volunteers of the AMADA have an auto-rickshaw smuggling a consignment of banned tobacco products, including khaini and talab, in the early hours of December 1 on NH-39, according to a release.

The statement said the auto, no. MN01/0724 was caught at around 2:30 am on December 1 after AMADA volunteers learnt that such items were being smuggled from Kangpokpi to Imphal at night.

A total of five bags of raja khaini, 30 cartons of khaini, and four bags of talab were recovered from the auto. The value of the seized goods is around Rs. 3,12,240, according to the release.

Though the owner of the goods, one Manoj Saha, managed to escape amidst the darkness, the auto driver, Haobijam John, was caught, it said. A van was also supposed to make the trip but failed to do after the auto was caught, it said.

Manoj Saha, now staying at Kakhulong, surrendered to the AMADA today, and from his disclosure it was learnt that the tobacco products were procured from a shop at Kangpokpi and sold through two shops a Masjit road, namely Pintoo Store and Lalu Store.

In this connection, the AMADA has asked the proprietors of the two shops to surrender to the organisation by December 5, 2006. Two persons identified as Ramayan and Sanjoy who were also involved in the smuggling have also been asked to surrender.
