IMPHAL, May 12: International Nurses Day celebration on the theme "Safe staffing save lives" organised by Nurses Association of Manipur was observed today at GM Hall at 9 am with minister of Health and Family Welfare Government of Manipur DK Korungthang as chief guest, director of Health Service, Government of Manipur Th Suresh as president and Kh Bimola Devi, state nursing superintendent and Dr W Motilal, medical superintendent JN Hospital as guest of honours. The Day is observed on the birthday of Florence Nightingale.

Chief guest on his speech said that Florence Nightingale was a dedicated and hardworking nurse who work for the people without any discrimination and appealed all nurses to follow her sacrifice spirit so as to secure dignity of nurses. On the other hand, increase in number of nurses in the state indicates that people started understanding the profession. He also said that officers and employees of the state have the tendency to servve only in Imphal region. Further, he urged all private and government nurses to serve well in the remote hilly areas too.

During the function, a student of Nursing Association of Manipur narrated a short life story of Florence Nightingale.

Citing the problems faced by nurses, Kh Memcha Devi, executive member NAM urged the government to convert the bill which was passed on July 17, 2005 to an act.

Opening songs were presented by nurse students. The function was attended by students from different nursing institutes. Sweets were also distributed to the patients of JN Hospital.
