Lunkim`s wife says husband not related to KLA affairs

The Imphal Free Press

IMPHAL, Feb 18: Reacting to the accusations levelled against Dr. T Lunkim, chairman of the Kuki Movement for Human Rights, by the underground Kuki Liberation Army, his wife, Mrs. C Lunkim has clarified that her husband has nothing to do with the intenal affairs of the outfit.

The octagenarian Dr Lunkim, it may be mentioned, has been detained by the underground group since January 16, 2006. The group, in a recent clarification, had said he had been `summoned` in connection with a case relating to the organisation and to Kuki politics in which he had allegedly meddled unwarrantedly.

Mrs. Lunkim, in a statement issued in response, noted that the KLA had in an earlier clarification stated that Dr Lunkim was summoned to sort out some family matters, whereas it has now said that it was in connection with a case relating to the outfit.

Mrs Lunkim said she was completely amazed why the KLA had distorted its own statements in this manner, and further clarified that her husband had nothing to do with the internal affairs of the group.

She also pointed out that no proof has been furnished to back the KLA`s allegation that her husband had tried to assassinate the group politically, despite the fact that Dr. Lunkim was now over a month in the underground group`s custody.

As such the question of levying a moderate fine from her husband does not arise, she stated.

Mrs Lunkim further said that if the KLA is currently observing a suspension of operations with the Indian Army and the paramilitary forces, then the two are both equally responsible for the safe and unconditional release of Dr. Lunkim.

In the meantime, the Centre for Organisation Research and Education, CORE has issued a world-wide appeal seeking support for action for ensuring Dr. Lunkim`s safety and continued well-being.

In its appeal CORE urged human rights defenders everywhere to write to the Indian Prime Minister, the chief minister of Manipur and the chairman, National Human Rights Commission, in this regard.
