Forensic anthropology to fight crime

IMPHAL, Mar 31: With the increase in crime rate in the state, there is an undeniable need to associate science in the investigation of crimes.
This was underscored during the conduct of the CME (continuing medical education) cum workshop on forensic anthropology held today at the RIMS mini auditorium.
Speaking at the occasion, chief guest of the inaugural function, Prof L Fimate, director, RIMS, stated that forensic anthropology should be conveniently utilised for effective criminal investigations.
Prof Th Biren Singh, Dean (Academic), RIMS, who was the president of the function also spoke on the need for improving forensic science in criminology.
In his welcome address, the chairman of the organising committee, Dr A Momonchand, professor and head, Dept of Forensic Medicine, RIMS, pointed out the dependency of administration of justice on scientific evidences.
He also presented a paper titled “role of forensic anthropologist in identification of unknown”.
Talking about the critical role played by forensic anthropologist, Dr. Momonchand stated that identification of victims becomes a challenging task for an investigating team and forensic anthropology can make a major breakthrough.
Dr Ruma Purkait, Dept of Anthropology, Saugor University, Madhya Pradesh, too presented a paper titled “Recent trends in forensic anthropology: Biometrics – An aid for establishing identity”.
She spoke on the importance and application of biometrics in fighting crime and identifying severely disfigured victims.
Dr Purkait also presented a lecture cum demonstration on “Anthropometry: Its role in sex determination and stature estimation from bones”.
A souvenir was also released by the chief guest during the inaugural function.
