Workshop on medicinal plants

IMPHAL, Mar 30: A two days workshop on medicinal plants of the state organised by Manipur Science and Technology Council, MASTEC was inaugurated today at the Hotel Imphal.
Speaking at the occasion, S Madhusudan, director of state science and technology who is also the chief guest at the inaugural function stated that varieties of medicinal plants found in the state are often discovered and given a name by people from outside the state as we are ignorant of its values.
Madhusudan also stated that it is high time that people of the state identify and preserve the medicinal plants which will also prove highly economical in future.
Allopathic drugs have numerous side-effects and are sometimes not cost-effective, however herbal medicines are cheaper and have less side-effects, he argued.
MASTEC director Th Surendranath, president of the function stated that his council took up a three-year data base managerial system of medicinal plants of Manipur and has identified around 200 plants.
Local name, botanical name and its medicinal values of the plants will all be entered into a computer profile, he said adding that the project will also give awareness to villagers.
The workshop sponsored by NSTMIS division, department of science and technology, government of India was also attended by Prof. H Nandiram Sharma, reader, botany department, DM College of Science, medical practitioner Nabakishore and Dr. P Kumar of life sciences, Manipur university as resource persons.
