Donations solicited for tsunami relief

IMPHAL, Jan 4: The Tsunami Disaster Relief Committee, Manipur, which was formed on December 31, 2004 primarily to extend help to the victims of the killer Tsunami of December 26 is to start collecting donations from the public with effect from January 5.

Donations received from the public will be given away to the victims directly, the committee said, in a statement, appealing to the general public to donate in cash, by cheque or in kind to the tsunami relief fund.

The collection of donations will begin with a simple function to be held at Dharamshala, Imphal on January 5. Donation boxes are to be put up by the committee at several places, which will open every day at 5 in the afternoon.

The recently formed committee is still in infant stage and interested volunteers can join the committee so that it can work in full swing, the statement added.
Meanwhile, the NHPC (Ladies Welfare Association), Loktak Power Station and Lotak Down Stream Project, Manipur has donated an amount of Rs 12,865 to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for the tsunami victims.

The members and functionaries of the United Mongoloid, Manipur has also observed a two minutes silence in memory of the tsunami victims.

The organisation is also organising a musical concert at BOAT on January 29 to collect funds which will go directly to the victims of the killer Tsunami which struck South East Asia on December 26.

In the meantime, the Khwairamband Bazar Stall’s Association, Manipur has donated an amount of Rs. 11,000 to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund to aid the tsunami victims. The association, in a release, also expressed its condolence for the victims.

The All Manipur Muslims (Meitei Pangal) Welfare Association has also announced it would contribute a sum of Rs. 5000 to the PM’s Relief Fund for the tsunami victims.
