Tsunami relief

IMPHAL, Dec 31: A committee of public-spirited citizens has been formed to raise funds for extending relief to the victims of the recent tsunami disaster that has badly affected many areas of the country and other states of South East Asia.

The committee for tsunami disaster relief fund, Manipur is chaired by W Shyamjai, president of the All Manipur Working Journalists Union, with L Umakanta and N Philips as convenor and co-convenor respectively.

The committee has appealed to all citizens, NGOs and other organisations of Manipur to contribute generously to the fund, which will be utilized to extend relief to those affected by the tsunami disaster.

Meanwhile, MLA Bijoy Koijam has announced that he would contribute a month’s salary to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund as aid for the tsunami-hit victims. The All Manipur Senior Citizens’ Welfare Association is also contributing Rs. 5000 to the PM’s Relief Fund for the same purpose.

The Joint Administrative Council, (AMGEO and AMTUC) has also resolved that all state government employees would contribute one day’s salary to the PM’s Relief Fund to assist the tsunami relief measures.
