IMPHAL, Apr 5: Amidst threats to the BJP, party workers and its state unit president Thounaojam Chaoba by the proscribed Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup, KYKL, many prominent politicians joined the party recently.
This was disclosed by Chaoba addressing an emergency press conference at his official residence at Babupara this evening.
While stating that it is the duty and responsibility of the SPF government to safeguard the BJP candidates and those under the threat, Chaoba lamented that his escort of Manipur Rifles’ personnel is inadequate.
The eminent entrants to the BJP are former president of the BJP Haobam Bhubon who abandoned the party earlier, Soraisam Biramani Singh, ex-minister, Thokchom Amumacha Singh, ex-commissioner, N Mahendra Meitei, ex-general secretary Congress-I, Md Habib Ali, ex-candidate, Jiribam along with 57 others and John K Ngahte, ex-candidate, Thanlon.
The state BJP president also stated that though the election campaigns are restricted due to constraints, the 24th anniversary of the party will be celebrated at GM Hall tomorrow to be attended by the Arunachal Pradesh chief minister, Gegong Apang as part of the BJP election campaign.
Earlier, Bhubon who also attended the press conference stated that his rejoining BJP is like a homecoming for him as there were no basic differences between the party and himself. He left the party only because, the BJP leaders at the Centre had allowed the extension of NSCN (IM)-GOI ceasefire in Manipur.
However, with the June 18, 2001 incident, the national leaders of the BJP realized the gravity of the situation and withdrew the ceasefire, he said adding that no more justifications were left for him to be out of the party.
He also added that in a democratic polity, it would be wrong for the people to be apprehensive and guided by threats from underground groups.
